    • The daughter of John & Sarah (Rowe) Cole of "Bommertown", Molland. A very kind lady who was loved by all but she liked discipline. One of her grand-nieces thought her mother used to call her "Auntie Polly", but a grand-nephew thinks that Emma's sister was known as that - so one of them was. She is said to have been kept at the kitchen sink! Her family thought she was practically marrying the Devil in William Cole, and his thought he was marrying beneath himself as she was Chapel. She moved up to Brandon Farm, Sandford St. Martin Oxfordshire with her husband after she had given birth to her son Harold in 1888 (when she first came to see the farm the villagers who saw her thought she would never make it back to Devon without giving birth). She had nine children in thirteen years - the last one died in 1979. It would seem that all are now dead who knew her, but she was remembered by some serving milk outside the dairy at Brandon Farm. She died in terrible pain from 1. Carcinoma of the Breast, 2. Secondary deposits in the Lungs. Her sons took the memory of her death to the grave - they could never forget her crying out for Morphine to dull the pain. Not long before she died she sent for her nephew, Herbert Crudge, to come and pray with her. Her gravestone reads:
In loving memory of EMMA COLE the beloved wife of WILLIAM MILDON COLE
of Sandford St.Martin died April 4th 1916 aged 60 years.
Her memory is a sweet fragrance, forgetful of self, mindful of others.
